Managing Weight Loss

Does it seem like your body wants to put on weight?

Holistic Approach

We often associate increasing weight with only two factors: a sub-optimal diet and a flagging exercise regimen. In truth, unintended weight gain is a multi-factorial process with many potential causes. While diet and exercise are important, and at Regenerative Medicine of Carmel we are well-versed in the most effective and sustainable nutritional and exercise models for optimal weight loss, more than these two approaches are needed for those struggling with weight loss.

Thyroid Balancing

Sluggish thyroid performance can significantly affect metabolism and, therefore, weight management (See our section on "Thyroid Balancing"). The thyroid can be considered a large furnace that helps burn calories for energy production. If the calorie source is poor and the furnace is "lukewarm", the result is stored calories, low energy, and weight gain. If you have been told your thyroid is "fine", this may or may not be true. It is often the case that thyroid numbers, namely the TSH, can show as "normal" while the patient is blatantly symptomatic with several indicators of a hypothyroid state. At Regenerative Medicine of Carmel, we assess every individual as exactly that, an individual, using the most applicative and reliable thyroid markers.

Hormone Levels

Suboptimal hormone levels found in different stages of life can also predispose many women and men to weight gain. If you have had weight challenges your whole life or you suspect a recent onset of peri-menopause or andropause has caused your weight gain, we will assess your hormones for the balance the body often demands for ideal weight maintenance.

Blood Sugar

Blood sugar imbalances can also add unwanted weight. Most are familiar with weight challenges associated with Type II Diabetes, but hypoglycemia and insulin resistance can also cause unwanted weight gain. Research suggests that one hypoglycemic episode during the day or night can reduce thyroid function by up to 17 hours. As mentioned above, reduced thyroid hormone levels can often cause or add to overall metabolic imbalance, resulting in weight gain.

Individualized Plan

In addition to the above reasons, several other factors for unintended weight gain will be explored via physical exam, a thorough history taken upon initial consultation, and comprehensive lab testing. By casting such a "wide net", we offer the best chance to discover the imbalances associated with your weight gain and thereby offer the most relevant solutions to your unique challenges.
